The Underground River. Wow!

March 17, 2010

Sabang Beach, gateway to the Puerto Princesa Underground River

Located off Sabang, about 50km north from the City center is the St. Paul Subterranean River National Park. The tourist attraction is a “New  7 wonder of the wolrd nominee and finalist” From Sabang beach, one can either hike to the mouth of the river or take a boat ride.We chose the easier option. The boat ride lasted for about 30 minutes and took us to a beach where we walked another five minutes to get to the mouth of the river. Quite easy if you ask me. This certainly works better than the hike/trek.

Back to the river. It  is said to be one of the most distinguished biodiversity conservation areas of the Philippines. Just outside of the river is a lush old growth tropical forest, interesting wildlife, pristine white sand beach, and unspoiled natural beauty. Monkeys, large monitor lizards, and squirrels find their niche on the beach. The cave itself features formations cast in limestone in an 8.2 km. navigable river. Only about 2km of which tourists can navigate. The unique highlight of the river is that it winds through a cave before flowing directly into the South China Sea. Major complex formations of stalactites and stalagmites, and several large chambers can be seen in this most unique gift of the earth.
